I liked rocky lockridge alot.Watched him quite abit over his career.Found out today in a boxing interview done a few months ago he is now homeless living in New Jersey..
LOL what is Ron Jeremy doin there? check out the guy in the grey n black suit at the end of the fight. on a more serious note, LaPorte was one of my faves growin up. i used to autograph my boxing gloves with my idols name on them such as Gomez, Benitez, and JLP. i agree with cbald those were the days when big fights were on reg. network tv. JLP had sum big fights vs. a very “dirty” but talented Eusebio Pedroza wish i could find those fights on youtube.
CBS used to have some GREAT fights. Duran/Hearns, Lopez/Lockridge, Brown/Trice (very underrated fight), Mancini/Arguello, Mancini/Bramble…it’s too bad they stopped showing fights. Hell, it’s really too bad bastards like King didn’t realize the value of building fighters up on NETWORK TV
A superb 1 punch ko. I agree. Laporte vastly underrated and yeah, he did beat JCC………………………………….but got shafted. If only Juan was a little busier! Brilliant little fighter though.
LaPorte was much better than his record might have suggested. He had his limitations, but he always gave a great showing in his fights. guy could really punch.
its too bad for him he had to come around when there were tons of other great fighters around. imagine having to face Sal Sanchez, JCC, Wilfredo Gomez, Pedroza, Azumah Nelson, and Kostya Tyszu among others.
He fought the best out there, thats for sure.
Actually the Pedroza fight which was as dirty as it comes was on CBS in January of 1982 I believe. LaPorte’s limitations were on display every time he fought a busier guy with a good chin Sanchez,Pedroza,Gomez, DeLaRosa,Chavez(although I think he outworked Chavez) Azumah Nelson, and Zack Padilla who just exhausted LaPorte.
Lockridge I think actually may have had a better career and lived up to his potential more despite this fight.
Nice work getting this up. Two years before this, Trevor Berbick, undefeated in some 12 bouts, all in Canada, took on Bernardo Mercado in Halifax. From what I read of it later, Berbick had Mercado up against the ropes in the first round, as Lockridge has LaPorte here, when Mercado landed such a powerful punch that Berbick toppled across the ring and went down for the count, and his first loss. He then ran off another dozen or so wins before losing to Larry Holmes. The Mercado loss, unfilmed?

Lockridge just didn’t mesh at all with LaPorte. That was a brutal right hand bomb that ended it.

juan laporte, very good, iron chinned. He fought like a true latino, forward, rarely hugging, no running.

Amen! I can’t understand it. Half the fighters today, nobodies ever heard of them.
March 9th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Absolutely…but those fights weren’t on CBS though.

Well done, Laporte. He made all latino fans proud, not just Puert ricans, I´m mexican and believe Laporte was very good.

I got here looking for a recording of Laporte’s title winning against Mario Miranda…some fights just seemed never to have actually happened lol

laporte was as tough as they come. his record reads like a who’s who of lower weight boxing in a tremendous era and no-one ever put a beating on him.
March 9th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
totally right!!
March 9th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Amen, bro’ (black71irish). LaPorte was a very, very good fighter. He gave JCC all he could handle, and that’s when Julio was at the top of his game.
