Greyhound Racing Facts

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

At first sight it seemed incredible to me to have to explain why we are opposed to Greyhound racing. The wealth of information on my web site alone should be enough, I thought, to demonstrate to anyone, that it is the cause of a lot of suffering of gentle, loving Greyhounds. The trouble is, however, one always seems to take for granted that the other person knows and has experienced what the writer or speaker has experienced. Unfortunately, or perhaps in this case thankfully, this is not the case. If everyone had seen what I have seen in the Greyhound racing environment, then Greyhound racing could not survive. The weight of opposition would destroy it. What I want to do in this essay is try to show why we are so opposed to Greyhound racing.

As you browse the web site you will find poems and stories that are written by people who have had direct experience of the horrors caused by the racing industry. Poems like Eternal sleep. This is a graphic account of what happens to healthy, loving Greyhounds every day. Mel, the needle man is what happens at a racing track near where I live, no doubt it is the same at all tracks. Then there is the quintet of stories on the “Muses” page. Bridges Hitched Thirsty Bonfire Genocide These five muses were written by a man who used to be a racing enthusiast. He visited our home and spoke to my wife and I about the atrocities he had seen on the tracks. He swore never to take part in anything like it ever again and as far as I am aware he never has. There are well over one hundred poems on Greyhound Muses now. One or two of them are funny and are there to bring a little light relief from the majority of the rest, which are, quite frankly, downright depressing. That is not the reason they are there, to make you depressed, they are there to try to make you understand that if you place a bet on a Greyhound race you are condoning and even supporting by your financial involvement, what you read about on the website.

Sometimes people say, “but don’t the dogs love to run?” Well maybe they do love to run but they don’t know what they are a part of do they? It’s like a baby or small child who loves to do something that you as an adult can see is clearly dangerous for the child. The race tracks in the UK, and as far as I am aware in the USA also, are oval in shape. There is no beginning and no end, the dogs go round and end up back where they started. A Greyhound can achieve a speed of up to 45 mph and they have to turn with the contour of the track at this speed. This is where a lot of the injuries occur. They range from a broken toe to a broken leg. Once the injury has occurred it depends upon the owner what treatment, if any, the dogs receive. If the dog is not winning races and making money for the owner he may not get any kind of treatment and just be left in pain.

A “good” racer may continue for four or even five years, then what? A Greyhound tends to live longer than most other breeds of similar size and it’s not uncommon to expect them to live to 15 or 16 years. I personally have had several Greys who lived to this age, so when they “retire” from the track at 4 or 5 years old they have at least another 10 years of life, if they are allowed to live. Unfortunately, most are not allowed to live. At this point I could give you a host of details about what happens to these loving trusting dogs but that is not within the scope of this essay. There are poems and stories on the website that will provide this kind of information so there is no need to repeat it here. Instead, I will refer you to poems like, The sport of death. A Greyhound’s last words. Born a Greyhound.

Okay, what is the scale of the problem? About 30,000 Greyhound puppies are born every year to replace the racing stock in the UK. I’m not sure what the numbers are in the USA but they must be relatively comparable. Of those 30,000 probably 10,000 make it to the racetracks in England and Ireland. What happens to the rest? Many are “put down” as puppies because it soon becomes clear that they will never achieve the standards required. Others who are perhaps considered not good enough to race in the UK but who are not too bad may end up going to Spain. These are perhaps the unluckiest of all. Now, if 10,000 enter the racing circuit each year, 10,000 must leave it. What happens to them? I think we have arrived back at the end of the last paragraph.

In a vain attempt to defend Greyhound racing, I have heard people say, “well, if there was no racing those dogs would never be born.” You bet they wouldn’t. It’s better not to be born at all than to be born into a life of suffering isn’t it? It’s like saying if everyone was vegetarian the cows and pigs and sheep would not be born. If you were an animal waiting to be born into the food chain and you were given the choice of whether to be born or not, what would you choose? I used to work at the UK Vegetarian Society and I have seen video footage of intensive farming methods and what happens in slaughterhouses, believe me, it’s better not to be born. Greyhounds are becoming very popular as pets so very many would still be born, but they would be loved and cared for, as is their right.

With further evolution of the race of man, Greyhound racing in its present form will cease to exist. There may still be those who allow their dogs to enjoy a run with others in a spirit of friendly rivalry, on safe straight-line tracks with good ground surfaces, but the root of the problem, money, will have no part in the new enlightened way. Any injuries will be rare and obtain immediate veterinary treatment, and the Greyhounds will be adored pets who live with their human companions in their house. The present barbaric practices within this industry will be looked upon as dog fighting and other cruel sports are viewed today. Unfortunately, this ideal is a long way off. Before it comes about many more thousands, even millions of beautiful Greyhounds will suffer and die before their life should have been over. So what can you do to help these beautiful dogs and bring about the change that is inevitable though slow to come about.

The first and most obvious thing is never to support the racing industry by going to a race or betting money on a Greyhound race at a bookmakers. If no one placed bets with bookmakers this cruel practice would soon fade out. Secondly, tell everyone you know what you have found out through this website and others, about the suffering and death caused by Greyhound racing. Tell them to visit this website and read the stories and poems but please make sure that they understand that they are not “stories” in the sense that they are fiction. I wish they were but they are written accounts of the atrocities that are happening every day to beautiful living beings. The third thing that you can do is to adopt a Greyhound yourself. Until our ideal comes about there will always be thousands of Greyhounds needing homes. Please make your next pet a Greyhound and I promise you that you will never regret it. In fact within a very short time you will be going back to where you got your dog from to adopt another one. (How do you think we ended up with 11 at one time.) If you can think of other ways to help then please click the “Contact us” button on the web site and tell me about them. I will be pleased to add anything useful.

I have spent a long time in rescue and re-homing of Greyhounds, many from the race tracks. I have seen many atrocities and I know what a terribly cruel world it is for a racing Greyhound. There is no copyright on anything on http://www.greyhoundmuses.com and everything is freely available for you to use to make as many people as possible aware if the inherent cruelty within this industry.

A Career As A Professional Gambler – Part 1

Friday, November 20th, 2009

It’s been several years since I was introduced to gambling albeit by a strange source – junk mail! Beforehand I had always classed gambling as a mugs game but like many others I didn’t really understand it or approach it the same way as a professional does.To date, it provides most of my income although it took a while to profit enough to make a living and quit the ‘day job’.

When I left school back in the good ‘ole eighties, I didn’t have a career in mind. I suppose I was very blasé and laid back and didn’t take things seriously. It was a mistake and I have regretted it. At school I was quite intelligent although my qualifications were distinctively average. I was the kind of kid who would rather kick a ball about it than knuckle down after school with their homework. Mine was done on the bus in the morning!

By the time I had left school, I had no idea of what I wanted to do and armed with just the basic qualifications I was destined for that low paid mundane job – and that’s exactly how it panned out. As the years passed making a living became harder and it seemed I was forever paying bills and not earning enough to enjoy the finer things, I started to look down other avenues but nothing really floated my boat – until that junk mail about gambling was pushed through my letterbox. From that day onwards I had a new ‘hobby’. From a hobby it became a passion. From a passion it turned into an obsession. An obsession in succeeding as a professional gambler.

Casino Hire

Friday, November 20th, 2009

If you are interested in getting a job as a casino hire, there are a number of ways that you could accomplish this. Before you actually go about the business of trying to search for a job however, there are a number of positions that the average casino would have available and you need to figure out which one suits you. Some of the possibilities are listed and discussed below.

Dealer: This is perhaps the job that everyone thinks of getting when they think about getting a casino job and indeed being a dealer at the casino can be pretty fun. You need to be able to make yourself look presentable in order to be a dealer and depending on the specific game that you want to deal, you could be required to have specialized skills anywhere from being able to shuffle and deal cards at the rate of 30 hands an hour or more in poker all the way to being able to do the same thing except with spins at the roulette table. While this job might seem to be extremely glamorous, dealers also have to deal with drunk and disorderly customers as well and therefore unless you have extreme interpersonal skills, this might not be the ideal job for you.

Waiter: While the casino is primarily there for the gambling and gaming facilities that they have, at the same time part of the casino hire list would be waiters and waitresses as well. This is because drinks are usually free at the casino and even if food is not free there are going to be restaurants around. Somebody needs to bring these food and drink items back and forth from the different tables and that is exactly why wait staff are needed. This position also requires interpersonal skills but just like the dealer’s position it is out and about amongst the gaming public and that means that the potential for tips are still there. However, you will deal with people less often than as a dealer and therefore some people prefer this option.

Dealers and waiters are just two of the many different general jobs that are required at a casino which is why if you are determined enough getting a job as a casino hire is pretty easy to do. Just make sure that you are vigilant in your search and you should be able to find a job at a casino within a short amount of time.

How To Play Omaha Poker

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Introduction: What is Omaha poker.
Omaha poker also known as Omaha holdem is a community card game and one of many variations of the poker game. The idea of the game is to make the best five card hand you can from the cards available to you, this is the cards you are given plus the community cards.

It is very similar to the popular game Texas holdem apart from a few small changes in the game play. The game can be played with any standard deck of 52 cards and anywhere between 2 to 10 players.

The main difference between Omaha and Texas holdem is that when playing Omaha poker you are dealt out four cards personal at the start of the game instead of just two. However you are only permitted to use two of the four cards plus any three of the five community cards.

The game play:
The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer posting a small blind bet, the player next to that then posts a big blind bet. The cards are then dealt out before the betting starts – four face down cards to each player. Once all the cards have been dealt out the action starts with the player to the left of the big blind, players may bet, raise or fold their cards at this stage.

After betting has stopped the three community cards are then dealt out for everyone to see, in poker terminology this is called the flop. The players can now adjust to the situation and a second round of betting starts. If no one places a bet then players have the option to check, fold or bet. If a bet has already been placed players can choose to call, raise or fold.

Once the betting is over a fourth communal card is dealt out before betting starts again, In poker this card is known as “the turn” card. Once again when betting players have the options to check, raise, call or fold.

Finally the last community card is dealt out, known as the “river card”. Then there is a final round of betting. Once the betting is over the player with the best five-card poker hand wins. The position of the dealer then moves one place to its left and the whole process is started all over again.

10 Ways To Win A Slot Jackpot

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Slot machines contain a “random number generator” (RNG) microcomputer that constantly spits out numbers. These random numbers correspond to positions on each of the reels in the machine. When a player pulls the handle or pushes the spin button he is not really initiating anything except the spinning of the reels, which is merely for show. He is simply telling the machine to display the reel positions that correspond to the last set of random numbers that were generated.

Certain tips on how to win a jackpot

The following are the tips of playing successfully in a slot machine.

  1. Only play the best paying machines – Look for machines that payout between 95 and 99 percent. These are mostly $1 and higher machines.

  2. Play non-progressive machines – This is because the random number generators are programmed to produce a higher number of reels and symbols on progressive jackpot machines.

  3. Bribe a casino employee – Ask an employee in the slots area which machines are the best. Offer them a cut of your profits for helping you.

  4. Physical placement – When picking a machine, location factor must be looked into. The physical placement of the machine is an indicator of how loose or tight the machine is. Loose slots are found near the change booths, on elevated carousels, near the coffee shop/cafe/snack bar, etc. You must avoid tight slots. They are generally placed near casino entrances, around or near the sports book/racing areas, near the ticket/show lines, etc.

  5. Do not play multiple-payline slots – Although it seems like one can have better chances playing multiple-payline slot machine, you are increasing the odds against you drastically.

  6. Always use your slots card – Do not forget to insert your players’ card in the reader before you begin playing and do not forget to take it with you when you leave.

  7. Play with coins rather than bills – If you want to get the most play for your money, feed the machines coins rather than using bills. However, make sure that the payout percentage is worth your time.

  8. Know when to stop – Discipline is necessary when gambling, regardless of what casino game it is. It’s very easy to just keep playing because you think you are minutes away from the jackpot, but that can be dangerous. Pocket 25% or 50% or 75% and add the remainder to your bankroll for more playing, or keep it all.

  9. Try the machine next to you if yours is not paying off – According to industry sources, the casinos hardly place two loose machines next to each other. If you are uncertain on whether your machine is loose, it may not hurt to try the machines on either side of you.

  10. Contrary to popular belief, the casinos do not “hide” or move their best machines simply because people find and play them. The casinos want them to be played. When slot machine players see and hear someone hitting a jackpot, it motivates them to pump more money into their own machine in hopes of hitting their own jackpot.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Playing Online Video Poker

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Online video poker was one of the first casino games to be played online – and actually, the first to be played on any computer. Video poker was available on some of the very first personal computers sold all the way back in the late 1970s. Today, the popularity of online video poker is exceeded only by online casino games such as slots and blackjack.

The Origin of Video Poker

Besides being the oldest of the online casino games, poker is perhaps the most ancient of all card games. The Persian game of nas is quite similar, and was played in present-day Iran by the Medes and Persians as long ago as 3,000 years. Historians who study casino games believe that the game of nas came into the United States by way of New Orleans, where it was introduced by Persian sailors during the 1820s.

As New Orleans was the major port of entry to the central and western U.S. for decades, it was inevitable that the game that would one day morph into modern online video poker would spread northward along the Mississippi and to the major river ports of Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, Saint Louis, Kansas City, Davenport and all the way to Minneapolis. From there, poker traveled westward with settlers and eastward along the rails.

Video Poker Today

Video poker has long been a fixture among casino games and other brick-and-mortar establishments that allow gambling. Thanks to Internet technology, card players were actually able to play online video poker against real opponents in real time via Internet Relay Chat, or IRC.

You actually have some choices when playing the cyber version of this venerable card game. You can play against other people in virtual card rooms, play against the house, or download versions of online video poker that you can play alone for entertainment purposes. Aside from the fact that all aspects of play – deals, discards, placing bets, etc. – are done in a virtual electronic setting however, there is really no difference between online video poker and the “real thing.”

No Card Sharks Here!

Those who run websites that offer online casino games such as video poker understand full well that reputation is everything. In addition, the largest online video poker sites are now publicly-traded companies that must be accountable to shareholders as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission. Therefore, online video poker is one of the cleanest forms of wagering on the Internet – a game you can play with trust and confidence.

Poker Tables – Taking Notes on Your Opponents

Monday, November 16th, 2009

As you might or might know, every poker online site allows players to take notes on other players. Constantly taking notes on other players will give you an advantage in future hands and future Sit-N-Go games. I guarantee you will run into another player again that you took notes on in a previous game. You will see the same players quite often, even on large sites such as Full Tilt Poker or Poker Stars.

When playing at the poker tables, what should you include in notes? You should be looking for the best players and the weakest players. The reason for looking for the best players is you’re looking to avoid the best players and take advantage of the weakest players. Here are some great questions to ask when analyzing players and taking notes.

Are the players loose or tight? For example, do they always call often preflop with weak hands, or do they only play premium hands when they raise?

Is the player aggressive or passive? Aggressive players will be constantly betting on the flop with nothing, raising often preflop, and playing many draws willing to invest a lot of chips to see if a draw hits. Passive players will continuously call bets.

Does the player defend their blinds? Take a note on the player if you notice a player always folding in the blinds to a raise. You should take advantage of this and start raising in late position when they are the blind.

Is the player winning or losing? This is a very simple note to take and it can help you identify exceptional and horrible players.

Is the player playing clear-cut or pulling risky moves such as trapping other players or constantly slow rolling monster hands? Also, does the player like to check raise or bluff? Bet with only good hands?

Fold with bad ones all the time?

Taking notes is a valuable tool all poker sites offer and it almost always goes unnoticed. By taking notes, you will definitely see an increase in profits, and eventually you will be able to play Sit-N-Go’s full time as a job.

If you do not start taking notes and you want to make Sit-N-Go’s a full time job, you will absolutely kick yourself for not taking notes. Online texas holdem has many great features such as taking notes and for FREE, why not take advantage of this? I mean take for example the world series of poker or the world poker tour, those guys study video after video of how people play. They see the same faces over and over again, especially the pro poker players. Sit-N-Go’s only have 9 people at the table and on average if you stick to the same site, you will be sitting with at least 2 or 3 of these people that you have played with before. Even if you THINK your good at poker and do not need any more advice, PLEASE consider taking notes. It’s a very simple and easy way to increase your skill level at the poker tables.

Bankroll Management and Goal Setting

Monday, November 16th, 2009

One of the biggest things that you will have to deal with in poker is not tells, it is not getting into the right cash game and it is not playing the right tournament. One of the biggest things that you will have to deal with is your bankroll. If you don’t have a bankroll then you can’t play poker -simple as that. Any poker player that is going to play for profit knows that they need to keep money set aside from the money they need to survive on a day to day basis. This money is called your bankroll. You cannot, I repeat cannot start to use the money you have set aside for the rent or groceries to fund your next trip to the casino. That is the fast track to getting evicted. Never gamble with money that you cannot afford to lose. This is why having a bankroll is so important.

The normal size bankroll to play in a low limit game such as a $2 – $4 limit game would be 300 times the big blind. In this case that would be $1200. This will afford you the ability to take some swings and an occasional losing session and still have you playing optimally, without the worry of where the rent is going to come from. Eventually you will find that you are getting better and would like to move up to a bigger game. This is where setting goals comes in to play. Let’s say that your next goal is to play in the $5 – $10 limit game. Going by the 300 times the big blind rule, you would have to build your bankroll to $3,000. Once you get there you can start to set goals to move up to the next limit. And so on and so forth.

There will be occasional times when you will get a run of bad cards and I am not talking about one session. It may be a few days or a few weeks, where you might get some really bad beats or find yourself getting dealt garbage 95% of the time. If you find yourself in situations where your bankroll starts to get smaller, then you will have to move down a limit and build your bankroll back up. And you know what? There is nothing wrong with that. Not only will it build up your bankroll, but more than likely it will build up your confidence as well. Managing your bankroll correctly and setting attainable goals will help make you not only a better poker player, but a profitable one as well.

NFL Week 5 Point Spread Picks

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 1:00 PM ET 1. *******COWBOYS (-12.5) VS. Rams******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

2. ******Packers (-1.5) VS. VIKINGS********THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR FIVE BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

3. ******Bears (-2.5) VS. LIONS******THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR FIVE BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

4. ******Texans (-2.5) VS. FALCONS******THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR FIVE BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

5. Ravens (-4.5) VS. BROWNS: The Browns are once again a home underdog as they were in Week 2 when the upset the Bengals by scoring over 50 points. Things figure to be much tougher on that side of the ball against a very tough Ravens defense that bent some in the second half last week against the Arizona Cardinals before holding on to win. QB Steve McNair once again had to leave the game early with injury and at this point it’s anyone’s guess as to whether he or Kyle Boller will start. The Browns on the other hand are an improved team with QB Derek Anderson as they nearly pulled off the win last week in Oakland against the Raiders. The Browns have shown somewhat of an offensive rhythm since the Cincinnati game and they figure to run RB Jamal Lewis all day long. Lewis will be looking to give a good showing to the team that gave up on him last season. The Ravens defense however is very tough against the run with DT Haloti Ngata clogging the lanes and things should be no different here. The problem with Baltimore however is on offense as things seem to bog down at times such as last week against the Cardinals in the second half. The Ravens are also not a good road favorite as they have now gone only 6-14 ATS in their 20 games as a road favorite. The Browns have enough talent to stay close here, especially if McNair misses the game. If McNair is out, then this pick is even stronger for the Browns. On the flip side, if Browns TE Kellen Winslow Jr. misses this game with injury, then we pass on this one and so should you. THE PICK: Cleveland Browns (+4.5)

6. DOLPHINS (-3.5) VS. Raiders: The Raiders will come into this game full of confidence after beating the Browns at the buzzer by blocking Phil Dawson’s potential winning kick. Those are the sort of game scenarios that fuel team’s the next week and the Raiders match up well against a struggling Dolphins team that lost on the road last week against the Jets. Miami is hurting for a win as their offense has struggled and their defense has been a shadow of its former top-notch self. The Raiders also qualify in a very profitable 40-11 ATS scenario in games following a last second win the previous week. Clearly teams gain confidence after such hard-fought wins and they are extra focused for the next week’s game. Miami should win this game but by only a field goal. Go with the Raiders to stay close enough to cover. THE PICK: Oakland Raiders (+4)

7. ******JETS (-3.5) VS. BILLS*******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 4:00 PM ET 8. PANTHERS (-2.5) VS. Buccaneers: The Carolina Panthers will turn to backup QB David Carr as starter Jake Delhomme will miss this one with injury. Carolina has been maddeningly inconsistent this season as their domination of the Rams in the road in Week 1 contradicts their lousy effort in Week 2 against the Texans at home and in nearly losing to the Falcons last week. The Buc’s on the other hand have been a nice surprise this season as QB Jeff Garcia has been just what coach Jon Gruden needed as far as having a QB he can win with. The defense has also surprisingly played well as talks of their demise due to old age have been unfounded. The Panthers should win this one but they are so inconsistent it is tough to say what they will do. Carr is also a big question mark here as he never has shown he can win games consistently. Tough one to call but if you must go with the home team here. There are no trends that stand out either one on both sides so it might be best to lay off this one however. THE PICK: Carolina Panthers (-3)

9. *****Seahawks (-2.5) VS. 49ERS******THIS GAME IS ONE OF OUR FIVE BEST BETS FOR THE WEEK.

10. *****COLTS (-9.5) VS. Broncos******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.

11. CHARGERS (-11.5) VS. Chiefs: The San Diego Chargers are a team in disarray as the QB and RB are arguing on the sidelines and both are not playing well to go with almost everyone else on the team in losing two of their first three. Things will be easier at home against a weak Chiefs team that can’t get into the end zone. The Chargers defense should be able to dictate this one against a Kansas City offense that can’t throw the ball with any consistency and in turn has caused star RB Larry Johnson to see a steady dose of 8-man fronts. The Chiefs do have a better than average defense however and they should be able to keep themselves close here. The Chargers are just too out of sync to recommend them covering such a high number and they also apply in a very negative 25-58-1 ATS week 4 scenario where they are favored by over 8 at home after a loss. The Chiefs are not a good team but they have enough defense to keep them in the game. Take the points and bank on a closer game than many predict. THE PICK: Kansas City Chiefs (+11.5)

12. *****Steelers (-5.5) VS. CARDINALS*******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME. SUNDAY NIGHT 8:15 PM ET

13. *******Eagles (-2.5) VS. GIANTS******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME. MONDAY NIGHT 8:30 PM ET

14. ******Patriots (-7.5) VS. BENGALS******WE HAVE A STRONG OPINION ON THIS GAME.
